Real Madrid forward Mariano Diaz has made two meager substitute appearances this season in the Spanish Supercup, and the club clearly wants the talented forward to leave on loan this winter.

Although Mariano Diaz was urged by Real Madrid to seek a loan deal this past summer, the former Lyon standout elected to remain at the Santiago Bernabeu. Admirably believing in his skills and filled with passion for the club, Mariano wanted to seize any sliver of an opportunity and prove to Zinedine Zidane that he’s deserving of a spot in the rotation.

Thanks to Karim Benzema‘s brilliance and Luka Jovic‘s encouraging skills, including a backheel assist last week against Sevilla, Mariano has been a rare sight in the 19-man squad. Even Brahim Diaz is ahead of him in the pecking order, and that fact was solidified by Brahim’s heroic substitute performance in Los Blancos’ Copa del Rey opener.

Mariano has plenty of interest around Europe when it comes to a loan, as his reputation remains high after his 20-goal campaign for Lyon.

According to a report from MARCA, Real Sociedad have interest in acquiring Mariano on loan as a replacement for striker Willian Jose, who is set to join Tottenham as a much-needed attacking reenforcement for Jose Mourinho.

Willian Jose wasn’t in La Real’s Copa del Rey squad, so a move to Spurs seems imminent at this point. This leaves a gaping hole in La Real’s attack, and it’s one that Mariano could ably fill. In fact, he would be a substantial upgrade over Willian Jose.

Mariano could flourish with Sociedad, just as Real Madrid loanee Martin Odegaard, who is already world class, has. With Mikel Oyarzabal also there, Mariano could have a half-season for the ages if a loan deal were to materialize.

Madrid and Sociedad have a strong working relationship, so perhaps La Real can use this to leverage a loan deal for Mariano. Bigger clubs, such as FC Schalke 04, could have interest in the 26-year-old, so Sociedad would have their work cut out for them. But it’s good to see they are among the teams in the running; they’d be a strong fit for Mariano.
