Real Madrid had most of La Liga’s best fullbacks this past season.

As you would expect, Real Madrid have some of the most impressive fullbacks in European football. In 2019-2020, no team in Europe’s top five leagues allowed fewer goals than Real’s 25, with Thibaut Courtois picking up the Zamora Trophy.

The fullbacks also played a huge role in the improved defense under Zinedine Zidane. Dani Carvajal had a major bounce-back season at right back, while Ferland Mendy established himself as the starter on the left side and the team’s best 2019 summer signing.

But where did Mendy and Carvajal rank among La Liga’s best fullbacks in 2019-2020?

5. Kieran Trippier, RB Atletico Madrid

Kieran Trippier became a familiar foe to Real Madrid fans in the first Derbi of the season in September, as he was the most threatening player for Los Rojiblancos. While Trippier drew a lot of criticism from Tottenham fans, most of it was unfair. But well, that’s typical for many Premier League fanbases. They are very harsh on their players.

The reality is that Trippier is a good right back, even if he has his flaws defensively. Those flaws were masked by Diego Simeone, and the 29-year-old finished with four assists and 1.6 key passes per game, according to WhoScored.com. He could very well move up this list by the time the 2020-2021 season ends.

Under Simeone, he also showed up defensively with more than three tackles and interceptions combined per game while being dribbled past less than once per match.
