Looking Ahead to April

Real Madrid will play six matches in the month of April with aspirations of closing the gap on Atletico Madrid and making it to the semifinals of the Champions League. Within a span of eight days, Madrid will play their most difficult matches of the month. Los Blancos will play four matches in La Liga and two matches in the Champions League.

While it will not be explicitly noted by Zidane or the players, the emphasis and focus will be the Champions League. It will be a repeat of last years UCL Final in Cardiff with Juventus.

  1. Champions League –  Juventus; April 3 (A)
  2. La Liga – Atletico Madrid; April 6 (H)
  3. Champions League – Juventus; April 11 (H)
  4. La Liga – Malaga; April 15 (A)
  5. La Liga – Atheltic Bilbao; April 18 (H)
  6. La Liga – Leganes; April 29 (H)

Madrid’s first five matches of the month will be played in just 15 days. With three of those five matches taking place at the Santiago Bernabèu, it will lighten the load of travel the team will have to endure. After their fifth match of the month, Madrid will be handed a well deserved 11-day break before their final game of April.

Rotation of the squad will be important now more than ever with plenty of minutes to be allocated. The depth of Madrid will be a great asset to Zidane as he will look to close the point differential in La Liga.

Conclusion

The boys are ready to go and there is no doubt in the minds of many that Madrid has what it takes to push on in the Champions League. While a La Liga victory is a bit of a stretch, Real can surely make a chase for second place. This month is extremely busy for Madrid and the depth of their bench will be truly tested.
