Real Madrid will miss Marcelo through El Clasico, but now Ferland Mendy is also suspended for next week’s La Liga match against Valencia.
For the second time this season, Real Madrid will have to play a game without a true starting left back. In late September and early October, both Ferland Mendy and Marcelo suffered injuries that forced Zinedine Zidane to start utility man Nacho Fernandez at left back. Then, Nacho went down against Club Brugge, forcing Zidane to do some maneuvering against Granada before the October international break.
Next week, Real will have to do the same against Valencia. Marcelo recently went down with a calf injury that will cost him a few games, including the Dec. 18 fixture against FC Barcelona. And on Saturday against Espanyol, Mendy was sent off after picking up a second yellow card late in the game. He will be suspended for the fixture at Valencia.
These two absences put Zidane in a bind, as there are no true left backs on the squad behind Marcelo and Mendy, who are both two of the best players at the position. But here are three possible left back options for Matchday 17 against Valencia, including a repeat of a cheeky position flip.
