La Liga: The Final Team of the Season for 2019/2020
Defenders
Right Back – Dani Carvajal
Dani Carvajal continues to be one of the best right-backs in the world. He had fierce competition in La Liga from the likes of Emerson, Jesus Navas, and Ander Capa, but there is no match for the two way presence of the Royal White’s right-back.
Carvajal played all but two matches since La Liga returned and put in valuable performances to help Los Blancos win ten in a row. While he still has not reached the heights of his 2016/2017, there is rarely a fullback who is equally good defending and attacking as Carvajal.
Center Back – Raphael Varane
Raphael Varane often does not receive the credit he deserves. He gets seen as a good defender taking advantage of playing alongside Sergio Ramos. However, that is far from the truth. Varane undoubtedly was the more consistent defender between him and Ramos.
While the Real Madrid captain is a behemoth himself, Varane’s ability to read the game and cover for his more adventurous partner is second to none. His excellent sense of positioning and blistering pace means that he rarely has to go down for a tackle. The French World Cup winner is one of the best defenders in the world, and he continues to prove his worth every passing season.
Center Back – Sergio Ramos
Ramos missed out on the La Liga Team of the Season pre-pandemic break. However, he had no intention of being left out by the end. Los Blancos captain came back from the break with intent and led the team to the 2019/2020 La Liga title in style.
El Capitan was immense for Real Madrid post break in their lead up to ten wins in ten matches. Ramos put in big performances in the back and scored crucial goals for Los Blancos. He ended the season with 11 goals, the most by a defender in the 21st century.
Left Back – Sergio Reguilon
Sergio Reguilon had a breakout 2018/2019 season for Real Madrid and continued his rise this season at a loan in Sevilla. Julen Lopetegui’s system is highly dependent on the fullbacks, and the former Los Blancos Boss found the perfect left-back in Reguilon.
Reguilon became a force to be reckoned with throughout the season. So much of Sevilla’s buildup went through either him or Jesus Navas on the opposite side.
The Royal White’s loanee created 1.3 key passes per game and provided four assists in the season. He also contributed with two goals.
