Can Real Madrid keep a clean sheet?

No team had more clean sheets last season than Real Madrid, who surrendered the fewest goals in Europe’s top five leagues en route to winning the La Liga title. But somewhat surprisingly, they never held Sociedad to a clean sheet in any of their head-to-head meetings. They allowed a whopping four goals to Imanol Alguacil’s side with their “B” defense in the Copa del Rey.

Even in their most recent 2-1 win, Real Madrid could not see out a clean sheet and were fortunate to come away with all three points. Real Sociedad are still a dangerous team without Martin Odegaard, boasting Mikel Oyarzabal, Alexander Isak, Portu, and now David Silva in the attack.

Thibaut Courtois is the reigning Zamora Trophy winner as La Liga’s best goalkeeper, and his mission in 2020-2021 is to have another all-time great season for the club. The Belgian keeper will want to break his own records from his second season at the Santiago Bernabeu and continue to build his legacy at the world’s most prestigious club.

He’ll need help in front of him, of course. Real’s back four is the best in the world when they are at all full strength, and a game against Real Sociedad at the Anoeta Stadium is an excellent first test for them. Oyarzabal and Isak are no pushovers and love punishing mistakes with goals.
