Can Real Madrid win the league for the second year running?

The last word of the last slide was ‘silverware.’ That is exactly what I will be talking about in this slide. Real Madrid have never won two league titles in two seasons since 2007-08 when they won it in 2006-07 and then in 2007-08.

If Zinedine Zidane manages to win La Liga in 2020-21, he will be the first Real Madrid manager since Leo Beenhakker to successfully defend the league title (Beenhakker won three consecutive league titles in 1986-87, 1987-88, and 1988-89.).

Real Madrid might have started the season with a draw, but a league season is played over a course of 38 games and Real Madrid will surely bounce back. They might not have added new signings to the team, but they have four ‘new signings’ in the form of Mayoral, Odriozola, Andriy Lunin, and Ødegaard. Count Luka Jović, Eden Hazard, and Marco Asensio – players that can be regarded as virtually new signings – and Real Madrid look set to challenge the top teams in all competitions.

FC Barcelona – Real Madrid’s closest competitors in the league and eternal rivals – seem to be in a state of rut. Los Blancos have the perfect chance to repeat as league champs this season if they can take advantage of the Catalans’ misery.

This season is going to be Zinedine Zidane’s managerial evolution. I think he will lead Real Madrid to their 35th league title. Whether he can do that without difficulty remains to be seen.
