Real Madrid Transfers: 3 talented players who could be sold to increase funds
RW Marco Asensio
Out of these three players, Marco Asensio is the least likely to move. But I don’t buy the “New Galactico” talk that we keep hearing. It happens so often that it almost seems like a smokescreen from Real Madrid, and, on top of that, I’m not sure this extra pressure seems to help Asensio at all. He appears to be a player who does best when he does not have to face a weight of unfair expectations. Asensio is a role player, not a superstar like Kylian Mbappe or Erling Haaland.
Being a role player is not a bad thing, especially when you have a sweet left foot like Asensio’s. His technical quality is excellent, which makes up for his lack of athletic ability and spotty decision-making. Out of Real’s wingers, he has been playing at a lower level than Eden Hazard, Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo Goes, and Lucas Vazquez when everyone is healthy. Loanees Brahim Diaz and even Gareth Bale have been more effective this season.
Asensio could bring in serious cash for Real Madrid this summer, which would help them sign an upgrade up front. The issue, however, is that there isn’t really a right winger they can sign. Nor is there a left-footed option, other than maybe Mohamed Salah or Riyad Mahrez. And neither of those players are expected to join Los Merengues. So that makes outright selling Asensio risky.
But if Real are high on Brahim and are willing to do some juggling up top, it could happen. Remember, Odegaard is left-footed and capable of playing as a playmaker on the right. He’s much better than Asensio and was better in this exact role at times last season for La Real.
I would consider Asensio more likely to be sold than a “New Galactico”. The future usually lies somewhere in between, but keep an eye on Asensio’s future, pending whether or not he bounces back as the season comes to a close.
