Real Madrid center midfielder Luka Modric is one of a handful of players enjoying a bounce-back season under Zinedine Zidane, but he could leave the club this summer.

If Luka Modric doesn’t stay with Real Madrid beyond the 2019-2020 season, then at least Madridistas got a chance to see one more season of Modric at his best.

While the 2018-2019 season wasn’t kind to Modric, who was the reigning Ballon d’Or winner during that period after winning the Champions League and coming second in the World Cup, the 2019-2020 season has been more fruitful.

After shaking off injuries early in the campaign, Modric has been his exquisite self since. The Croatian star has scored some bangers this season, and his passing and work rate in midfield have been as good as ever. Modric’s technical quality on the ball is obvious in all aspects of his game, including the clever touches he makes.

But while Modric is still operating at a high level despite being 34 years old, the Real Madrid star may want to head to a different club this summer.

Modric’s contract is set to expire, and he could generate a great deal of interest from Serie A or MLS. Those are two leagues that are friendlier for older, technically-gifted players, as Modric may no longer be a regular for Real Madrid in 2019-2020.

As he’s shown this season, Modric still has something to give to Los Blancos, so if he wants to remain with the club in 2020-2021, Real would find something for him as a key veteran backup.

According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, via Football-Espana.com, Los Merengues will let Modric dictate his future this summer.

This means that if Modric wants to move to, say, Milan or Miami, Real Madrid won’t stand in his way.

It’s an important courtesy to offer to Modric, who has been the definition of a club legend during his time at the Santiago Bernabeu. He’s won so many titles and established himself as one of the most individually brilliant midfielders of his generation while with the club.

Again, Modric has something to offer in 2020-2021, but since Real asks for a high standard of play and wants to get younger under Zinedine Zidane’s “Revolution”, Modric may also see a peaceful exit from the club as a courtesy. After all, nothing beats a happy ending, and with Real on the cusp of the league title, Modric could finish his last season with the club as a champion.
