Real Madrid MVP of the season Casemiro seems to be the odd man out! There seems to be a division among Real Madrid fans on whether to include Casemiro in the starting lineup.

Despite the fact Casemiro lacked some qualities, he is still a very good defensive midfielder in the world of football. The treatment Casemiro is receiving among fans are similar to those Claude Makelele endured during his time at Real Madrid.

Claude Makelele

Claude Makelele was one of the most dynamic central defensive midfielder in the world of football. He was absolutely brilliant in the defensive aspects of the game. The central defensive midfield role is also called “The Makelele role.”

Makelele was a phenomenal and unique player. He is raved by pundits, tacticians and even coaches. Makelele enjoyed the defensive aspect of football. He wasn’t exactly flashy in the attacking third nor was he involved in those areas. He was not a creator, but he can prevent oppositions from creating chances. Fiorentino Perez didn’t think highly of him. In similar fashion, fans are treating Casemiro the say way.

He said, “We will not miss Makelele. His technique is average. He lacks speed and skill to take the ball past an opponent. Ninety percent of his distribution either goes backward or sideways. He wasn’t a header of the ball and he rarely passed the ball more than three meters. Younger players will arrive who will cause Makelele to be forgotten.”

Fiorentino Perez was wrong in his assessment of Claude Makelele. Real Madrid became vulnerable for many years after he was sold. They were not able to established a dynasty that can win trophies for many seasons.

Makelele was a brick wall in defense. He was a player many attacking players loved playing with because he can cover for them defensively. Makelele brought balance to Real Madrid. Balance is very important in football. After the sale of Makelele, Zinedine Zidane voiced his concoerns. He said, “why put another layer of gold paint on the bentley when you are losing the entire engine.”

Captain Fernando Hierro was another teammate who think hightly of Makelele. “I think Claude has this kind of gift. He’s been the best player in the team for years but people just don’t notice him, don’t notice what he does. But you ask anyone at Real Madrid during the years we were talking about and they will tell you he was the best player at Real. We all knew, the players all knew he was the most important. The loss of Makelele was beginning of the end for Los Galacticos… You can see that it was also the beginning of a new dawn for Chelsea. He was the base, the key and I think he is the same to chelsea…”

Casemiro

Makelele teammates knew how important he was to their success. Similarly, Casemiro is also important to Real Madrid success now. Zidane see Makelele in Casemiro. As someone who worked under Ancelotti, Zidane know how important it is to have a balance team.

It is hard to understand why many fans do not want Casemiro in the starting lineup. He brings balance, he is a big game player, and he can pass the ball with accuracy. He proved this year he can compete with the big boys.

If Casemiro was playing for another team other than Real Madrid, there’s a possibility he may get the recognition he deserve. He improved and tailored the way he play and read the game during his loan span at Porto. Casemiro was the glue that tied everything together offensively and defensively.

He doesn’t wear the Galacticos price tag. Real Madrid only paid a measles fee to Porto to have him back. He isn’t as creative as the other two midfielders he share the field with. However, he does have grit unlike the rest. He is a wall in the heart of Real Madrid defense. He enjoys doing the “dirty work” with pride. He brings balance, freedom and an insurance card in defense. He is the new Makelele of Real Madrid. He is indeed one of our own and fans should support him because he is here to stay.
