It was by far Real Madrid’s best performance of the season and it came in the biggest game of this season. With key players injured, Zinedine Zidane’s side’s convincing showing puts them 4 points clear of Barcelona and 9 points clear of their city rivals Atletico Madrid.

Real Madrid Ratings

Keylor Navas: 8

The Madrid keeper didn’t have much to do for most of the game but game came up with an amazing save from a close range Carrasco shot in added time.

Dani Carvajal: 7.5

The full back defended very well winning 4 tackles, was a threat going forward as usual, only dispossessed once on the night.

  • Raphael Varane: 8.5

Just when you thought he wasn’t developing like he should, he comes through with one of his most assured performances of his career. Varane won 4 aerial duels and completed 86% of his passes.

    Nacho: 8

I must admit when I saw his name on the team sheet before kick off I wasn’t filled with confidence. However, the young Spanish center back had one of his best ever showings in a Madrid shirt and proved me wrong completely.

    Marcelo: 8.5

What else can be said about the Brazilian that hasn’t been already? He’s arguably been Real Madrid’s best player this season and he put in a good defensive performance as well as a being his usual self going forward, almost had an assist with that early Ronaldo header.

    Luke Modric: 8

Making his first start since coming back from injury the Croatian midfielder was at his best today, controlling the midfield, turning defenders to statues with his turns and splitting the defense with some of his passes, he made up for the lack of Toni Kroos.

    Mateo Kovacic: 7.5

Many Madrid fans were skeptical when we first signed him but this season he has shown he has what it takes to be a world-class midfielder. He was extremely tidy with his passing completing 91% of his passes and also crucial in defense making 4 tackles, helped Modric control the middle of the pitch.

    Isco: 9

The best player on the pitch tonight and would be receiving the match ball if Cristiano didn’t score his hat trick. Showed so much flair, flicking the ball over defenders to himself on multiple occasions and completing 3 take ons, also played Bale through with an amazing one touch pass for the 3rd goal.

    Lucas Vasquez: 7

Lucas was probably the only Real Madrid player to look nervous to start the match and gave the ball away too much. But, he recovered well winning the free kick for the first goal and he also put in an amazing defensive shift covering for Carvajal.

    Gareth Bale: 7.5

The Welsh fire-breathing dragon wasn’t at his brilliant best but he came up big when he got the chance, he burned Juanfran with his incredible pace and played a perfect ball in for Ronaldo and Madrid’s 3rd goal.

    Cristiano Ronaldo: 10

Man of the match, Incredible performance by Real Madrid’s main man who was back to his best in the biggest game of the year. Also now the all time top Madrid Derby scorer with 18 goals, as well as top scorer in La liga this season with 8 goals. Only needed 5 shots on target to get his hat trick but was also excellent holding the ball up as well as completing 2 dribbles.

    Subs:

    Karim Benzema: 6.5

Came on for Isco on the 79th minute, didn’t do anything special but he probably just wanted to keep the scoreline as it was, held the ball up pretty well.

    James Rodriguez N/A

Came on for Cristiano in the 83rd minute, didn’t have time to put his stamp on the game.

    Marco Asensio N/A

Came on for Lucas Vasquez in the 86th minute, also didn’t have time to do much.

    Atletico Madrid Player Ratings:

    Jan Oblak: 6.5

Made an incredible save from Cristiano’s early header, just keeping it from crossing the line, the Atleti keeper couldn’t do much about any of the 3 goals but also wasn’t outstanding.

    Juanfran: 6

Wasn’t he usual self on the night failing to create much going forward and also got caught out of position and beat for pace by Bale on the 3rd goal.

    Savic: 5

Unlucky to deflect Ronaldo’s free kick into his own net but you can’t defend his tackle on Ronaldo for the penalty, it was a lapse in judgement from the young Atletico defender and it cost his team dearly.

    Diego Godin: 5.5

The Uruguayan wall that is Godin was not up for it tonight with an unusually poor performance. He was out leaped by Ronaldo on the early header chance, and was also beaten by him in a foot race from the halfway line as the Real Madrid number 7 got to Bale’s cross first for an easy finish.

    Filipe Luis: 7

The only Atleti defender who did himself justice on the day, winning 6 tackles and completing 2 dribbles.

    More from The Real Champs

    Yannick Carrasco: 7.5

Atletico’s only player who looked threatening going forward, completing 9 dribbles and taking 6 shots, only one was troubling for Navas though as the Belgian nearly got his name on the scoresheet in added time.

    Gabi: 6

The Atletico Madrid CDM didn’t control the game and failed to win the physical battle only making 2 tackles, also put in a silly challenge when Modric was going past him and received a yellow card.

    Koke: 5.5

The Spanish midfielder completed 92% of his passes but most of them were sideways, he created a very nice chance for Saul early on but failed to influence the game beyond that point.

    Saul Niguez: 6.5

Wasted the best chance Atleti had in the first half, was a passenger for most of the game failing to create anything threatening for his side, however he did get stuck in defensively winning 4 tackles.

    Fernando Torres: 5

Brought basically nothing to their frontline only having 1 shot and completing a poor 63% of his passes, was subbed off for Gameiro in the 62nd minute.

    Antoine Griezmann: 5.5

Had a suprisingly poor showing in a massive game for his team, only having 2 shots both of them being straight at Navas. Atletico will be asking for more from their star man in upcoming games.

    Subs

    Kevin Gameiro: 6

Probably should have started the game but when he did come on for Torres, he failed to make anything major happen for his team.

    Angel Correa: 6

Came on for Gabi in the 62nd minute, was dispossessed twice and got yellow carded in the 84th minute, couldn’t change the game.
