The Game Changer

Only until recently, precisely last season, Benzema wasn’t that player you could wholeheartedly depend on to change the game with a strike in the dying minutes of a game, or bag a hat trick to carry your team through to the next round of the Champions League.

That’s the main reason why Sergio Ramos is one of the most respected players by the fanbase. He might be a reckless defender and a sloppy one at times but despite that, he can turn tables in the flicker of an eye.

That’s also why I believe Benzema’s best season was the last one and not 2011/12, despite the Frenchman scoring more goals in the latter. He didn’t only score, he did it when Ronaldo couldn’t.

Ronaldo was being criticized for scoring only against “small teams”. Meanwhile Benzema was scoring on a consistent basis in La Liga as he carried the team when Ronaldo didn’t do it.

That’s why he was brought to the Bernabeu in the first place: As a player who can carry the team, not just help out his teammates.
