Real Madrid’s Momentum

Real Madrid had a rocky start to 2017. After two good matches, they received their first loss of the season, ending their record-breaking unbeaten streak, losing in the last minutes to Sevilla. Then they were eliminated from the Copa del Rey by Celta Vigo, crushing any hopes for a treble this season. Karim Benzema went through a goal drought and Real Madrid started the year with tons of injuries. But then, the team received a blessing in disguised as an issue: Two matches were cancelled back to back for various reasons.

While most teams would see this as an inconvenience due to the fact that you loss your form and run the risk of being rusty, Los Blancos capitalized on this unprecedented break to recoup. Most of the injured players became match fit and Benzema had the chance to focus on his finishing. By the time the match vs Napoli came along, the team was back at their best.

The important thing to watch out for is if they can bring that momentum back to La Liga. Benzema looked like a man with a point to prove and he needs to keep that intensity up domestically. Cristiano Ronaldo was setting up crosses left and right, Toni Kroos ran the game to his heart’s content, and James Rodriguez reminded us why Florentino Perez paid €80 million for his transfer. If the culb can keep this momentum up, we should win La Liga
