There’s been tons of rumors about making El Clasico an event that rivals championship finals, but until recently, none of them have materialized. That is until last week when the guys at “Jorge Ramos y su Banda” at ESPN reported it might be coming to the International Champions Cup next summer.
While Real Madrid and Barcelona have clashed here in the United States before, they haven’t faced each other outside of Spain in over 30 years. This would become an annual event making it one of the biggest pre-season matches.
The match would be played annually at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, FL. This makes sense due to the fact that both teams have huge followings in the Hispanic community which is ever-present in South Florida.
Pre-season matches in the United States have been a staple of the pre-season in the last couple of years. The challenge however, has always been finding people to attend the matches in a way that rivals league and tournament matches. El Clasico seems like the answer to that. The Hard Rock Stadium holds 65,326 people, making it perfect for a high-profile match like El Clasico. There have also been talks of making it in the same format as the Super Bowl, with pre-match and halftime shows to maximize viewers.
Just in case you weren’t hyped enough, this El Clasico promo should be more than enough to get you excited for the possibility of match of this caliber being played stateside. With soccer fans growing exponentially in the past decade, expect this match to be touted as one of the biggest sporting events in the country.
