Real Madrid beat Athletic Club Bilbao at the San Mamés, keeping the pressure on Barcelona in La Liga. Alex McVey analyzes the match with three quick takeaways.

 1. This was a huge away win

Real Madrid have already played their biggest away fixtures of the year. The San Mamés was the last big away test on Madrid’s docket. Athletic Club are an extremely dangerous team at home. And, if past results are any indication, Real Madrid were in for a tough fight, having only won 1 of the last 3 matches played at San Mamés.

While they may not have passed with flying colors, they nevertheless got away with the win. And, as learned in the tweet below, Real Madrid is the first team to record a win at Athletic’s fortress in seven months. Real Madrid now get to take some time off for the international break, and will come back to face tough opposition in April in the form of Atleti, Bayern, and Barcelona.
