Earlier this week, Spanish newspaper AS reported that Real Madrid will offer new contracts to Dani Carvajal and Marcelo in June. Given that Real Madrid have been heavily reliant on their full-backs as a source of offensive production, it should come as no surprise that the club is seeking to lock down their players at these positions to long term commitments.

While both players are currently under contract until 2020, these new contracts would extend their obligations at Madrid until 2022.

Not only would this provide the club with some stability at these positions, it would also increase their leverage in negotiations if another club did decide to go in for these valued players.

This is a big step for Real, as they look to lock down their best defenders for the foreseeable future, with Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane both under contract until 2020.

Marcelo is having an amazing season with Real Madrid, consistently cited as one of the key sources of Madrid’s offensive potency this season. He is racking up assists at an astonishing rate for a defender.

This season is his 11th at the club, and as the AS article linked above notes, this contract would take him to 16 if he fulfills the entirety of the contract. As they write, this would give him the opportunity to become the foreign-born player with the most appearances for Madrid:

"The Brazilian left-back is the third foreign player to have made the most appearances for Madrid (395) and he aspires to overtake the two players ahead of him in that list – Roberto Carlos (527 games) and Di Stéfano (396)."

Despite some early fears that Danilo would overtake him, Dani Carvajal has solidified his position as Real Madrid’s first choice right-back. While Carvajal is not quite the offensive machine that Marcelo is on the left, he is more reliable in defense, making him one of the most balanced right-backs in the world.

Indeed, as the table in the tweet below demonstrates, Carvajal’s production in terms of chances created, tackles, and interceptions puts him as one of the best right-backs in La Liga.

Hopefully once Madrid get their signatures on these new contracts, they will work on finding suitable backups for these players. As he himself admits, Fabio Coentrão is not fit to play at Real Madrid. And while Danilo has been slightly more useful than Coentrão, he has simply not been up to Madrid’s standards.

With these new contracts, it looks like Real Madrid will continue to have two of the best full-backs in the world for years to come. Now, it’s time to find them some backups.
