Real Madrid have had a tough time keeping a clean sheet lately. They’ve had an especially difficult time keeping a clean sheet away from home:

But they managed to do so today, with backup goalkeeper Kiko Casilla in between the sticks for Madrid. Despite what the scoreline says, this was not necessarily a vintage defensive performance from Madrid.

Madrid did absolutely everything they could to try to allow Granada to have one goal at the end of the match.  Granada was able to inexplicably cut through Madrid’s back line toward the end of the match, and a combination of careless mistakes and sloppy giveaways nearly cost Madrid dearly.

More from The Real Champs

Kiko Casilla was forced into making 3 total saves in the match, but the saves amounted to a total of .1sQxG (only saving .1 expected goals). Besides Casilla’s saves, the only thing keeping Madrid’s clean sheet was extremely profligate shooting by Granada.

Had Granada managed to put just a few more of their shots on target, Madrid would have been facing another match without a clean sheet.

Fortunately, that was not the case, and Madrid managed to keep their second consecutive clean sheet. Hopefully this trend keeps up as we move into the final crucial matches of the season.
