Real Madrid are on high alert after learning that Italian goalkeeping prodigy Gianluiggi Donnarumma will not extend his contract at AC Milan. Here’s the latest round of transfer rumors about Real Madrid’s potential keeper target.
Gianluiggi Donnarumma is only 18, but the young keeper has already made a name for himself as the heir apparent to the throne of Italian national team goalkeeper Gigi Buffon. His wicked shot-stopping ability and enormous wing-span make the gangly teenager an enticing prospect for top clubs around Europe.
Donnarumma gave a huge boost to those clubs hoping to pry him away from AC Milan. Reports indicate that Donnarumma turned down AC Milan’s offer of a new contract. Donnarumma has one more year left on his contract, so if Milan hope to get any money for him, they will need to sell him off this summer to prevent him walking on a free next summer.
David de Gea has seemed to be Real Madrid’s most likely transfer target at the goalkeeper position for years. Now, though, some reports suggest that Madrid have moved on from their interest in the Spanish keeper.

If that’s the case, Donnarumma could provide Florentino Perez with an enticing alternative. As Marca reports, a number of members of the Italian media isolate Real Madrid as the most likely destination future for Donnarumma.
Some rumors indicate that James Rodriguez could be used as a bargaining chip in the negotiations with AC Milan, who are said to be interested in acquiring the services of the want-away Colombian.
In a previous article, I scouted Donnarumma as one of four possible replacements for Keylor Navas at Real Madrid. Donnarumma’s physicality, agility, and young age all provide a huge upside to signing the keeper. He could be a star for years to come. However, he is also still relatively untested at the top levels. There is no guarantee that he will live up to his potential.
But if he does meet the expectations that have been laid out for him, the results could be profound.
