Real Madrid have released their third kit for  the 2017-2018 season, and it is sure to divide opinions.

The kit, manufactured by Adidas, features the teal blue color found prominently throughout all three of this year’s kits. Adorning the lighter blue field are a series of darker shaded blue squares.

The kit features the all white lettering and club crest, and the Club World Cup winner’s badge, positioned somewhat awkwardly above the Adidas logo on the shoulder, rather than in the center of the chest where it used to go.

It’s a strange design which emphasizes an odd distribution of geometric shapes.  It’s already dividing opinions.

Some seem to be really into the design.

Others, not so much:

One of the things that makes this kit so unique is that it was designed by a fan. The fan was brought out to Real Madrid’s training in LA for the reveal.

Adidas ran a contest last year that would allow fans to compete to design their team’s third kit. This year’s third kits for AC Milan, Juventus, Flamengo, Manchetser United, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid are all designed by fans.

As is the norm with these online contests, plenty of people tried to hijack the shirt design. Of course, some trolls decided it would be hilarious to design a Madrid shirt in the famous claret and blue of our Catalan rivals. There were also a number of ridiculous entries, like the Jose Mourinho, the Julio Iglesias, and yes, even the Charizard.  Real Madrid are lucky they didn’t have a real Boaty McBoatface type situation on their hands.

You can find out more about how the kit was designed by checking out this video.

Real Madrid have already began to advertise the kit with promotional photos and videos featuring Madrid’s players. You can find all of the shirts at Real Madrid’s online shop.
