Real Madrid are not the only European club interested in signing young French striker Kylian Mbappé. Manchester City are now attempting to out-bid Real Madrid to try to sign Mbappé.
After the sale of Alvaro Morata, I argued that Real Madrid should do everything in their power to try to sign Kylian Mbappé. Mbappé is one of those generational talents who Real Madrid simply cannot risk allowing another team to snatch him out from under our noses.
Yet it looks like Manchester City is trying to do just that.
Real Madrid and Manchester City now appear to be in a bidding war over Mbappé. Sid Lowe reports for The Guardian that Madrid have been closing in on Mbappé’s signature, and feel confident in their ability to sign the young Frenchman. Kevin McCauley from SBNation reports that Monaco denied that Real Madrid had reached a €180 million deal, but that the deal is ultimately more likely to happen than not.
Nevertheless, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City might throw a wrench into the operation. City have also put in a massive bid for Mbappé’s services. Reports suggest that City are offering a similar price tag of €180 million. That means that Mbappé will either have to choose which club he likes best, or Real Madrid will have to re-up their bid.
Madrid now have quite a bit of cash to spend in the summer transfer window. With Danilo, Morata, and Mariano all shipped off, and Pepe and James’ salaries no longer on the books, Madrid should have the financial flexibility to make this transfer happen.
However, City are bringing the financial weight of the Premier League to bear on this transfer negotiation. They’ve already spent a boatload of money on bringing in Ederson, Benardo Silva, Danilo, Kyle Walker, and Benjamin Mendy. But that doesn’t seem to be slowing them down.
There is a chance, though, that the deal still doesn’t go through. Monaco threatened to get FIFA involved to try to prevent big clubs from improperly tapping up Mbappé. And, Monaco have also indicated that they are now in talks to extend Mbappé’s contract.
Real Madrid should put an end to all of this. Mbappé’s flexibility and goal-scoring prowess, not to mention his young age, make his transfer a no-brainer for Real Madrid. It’s time to flex Madrid’s financial muscle and make this transfer happen.
