Real Madrid fans planning protest for Cristiano Ronaldo red card in Super Copa second leg
By Ben Sundock
Everyone around Real Madrid was frustrated with the referee’s decision to give Cristiano Ronaldo a red card in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup. Thus, fans are incredibly frustrated their star player will be suspended for the next five games. So much so, they’re planning a protest for the second leg tie tomorrow night.
Real Madrid fans are angry. Very angry.
Despite winning the first leg of the Super Copa 3-1 on Sunday, fans attending the second leg of the Super Copa against FC Barcelona tomorrow night in the Santiago Bernabéu are staging a protest to voice their anger to the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), who handed down a five match ban to Ronaldo after picking up his second yellow card, and pushing the head official.
According to Marca, the crowd at the Bernabéu will boo and whistle in the seventh minute, and wave handkerchiefs to show their frustration with the decision. Despite the referee being different from the first leg (Jose Maria Sanchez Martinez will be in charge), the fans still want to show their anger towards the RFEF.
Surprisingly, manager Zinedine Zidane has also voiced his annoyance with the decision as well. Zidane is not one to contest an official’s decision, and he said in an interview earlier today that he doesn’t like to criticize the officials, but feels he needs to in this circumstance.
“What we’re going to do is wait for tomorrow. The committee is going to meet in the morning. After that we will see what we’re going to do,” he said. “I’m disappointed. All of us are disappointed. As always, I’m not going to get involved with the referees but, when you see everything that happened…”
“We are going to talk to the committee about this as well. When you think he is not going to play in five games for us, something is up.
“It bothers me and it bothers all of us. It’s a lot of games for him and that’s all I’ll say.”
When asked to go into further detail, Zidane reiterated that he was frustrated and that he and the club would do everything they could to appeal the suspension.
Zidane and the fans have a right to be mad for this suspension decision. It’s ludicrous.
