Three takeaways from Real Madrid’s 2-0 El Clásico victory
Real Madrid brushed away Barcelona in the Supercopa de Espana last night, posting a 2-0 win on the night and a 5-1 win on aggregate. In an attempt to sum up a brilliant night for Los Blancos, here are 3 takeaways:
1. Real Madrid’s midfield ran the show
When you start with a midfield featuring Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Mateo Kovacic, fun is guaranteed. Time and time again in the first half, Real Madrid’s midfield was playing champagne football and Los Blancos new number 10, Luka Modric, was often at the heart of it all.
By the end of the first half, Madrid had seen nearly 60% of the ball, finishing the game with 52%. If the scoreline wasn’t embarrassing enough for Blaugrana supporters, then the possession stat will make their stomach churn. The Catalans pride themselves on playing possession football and witnessing their arch rivals beat them with their own game will be extremely humiliating for Barca fans.
2. Karim Benzema was on fire
I know, I know, I have a bit of a soft spot for the Frenchman, but, Karim turned in a near perfect performance last night.
Playing in the centre of his favoured 4-3-3, Benzema seemed to lead the press of the Barca backline, creating no less than two scoring chances from winning back possession. His hold up play was superb, his goal encapsulating everything that is good about the French striker. It’s a huge morale booster for Big Benz ahead of the new season.
3. The new faces got a chance to show off
Theo Hernandez and Dani Ceballos both made their debuts for Real Madrid last night. Theo Hernandez appearance in this game was of particular interest for me, as he replaced Marco Asensio rather than Marcelo. The Brazilian played as a winger for the remainder of the game. I am quite excited to see how Marcelo takes to playing as a winger and would be delighted to see Theo get more game time as a result.
