Real Madrid 0 – 1 Real Betis – Quick take / hot take reaction to Madrid’s disastrous loss
By Alex McVey
Real Madrid drop all three points at the Santiago Bernabéu in a shocking result. Madrid had every opportunity to put the game away, but they were unable to do it. Here’s your quick take/ hot take reaction.
Real Madrid finally have their consecutive scoring streak broken in the most heartbreaking and disappointing of fashions. Real Betis put in a defensive performance for the ages and completely shut Madrid out of the match. Madrid had chances, they created danger, but ultimately nothing was able to get past Betis. They had the opportunity to break Santos’ record which they had just matched against Real Sociedad, but it was not to be.
Former Real Madrid backup keeper Antonio Adán was enormous this evening. He produced save after save that kept Real Madrid from putting the match away at pretty much all stages of this match.
Real Madrid were also wasteful. Luka Modric, who was otherwise immense, skied an easy goal opportunity put on a plate for him at the beginning of the match from Carvajal. Toni Kroos attempted a number of his characteristic long shots without much result.
Ronaldo was bad. Like, really bad. Like, falling on the floor and then yelling at his teammates for it bad. Add his profligacy in front of goal tonight, and this was one of the worst Ronaldo performances we’ve seen in a while. Not a great way to kick off your La Liga campaign after a lengthy suspension.
Besides his one goal-line clearance and this wasted opportunity, Carvajal was pretty poor this match. Attacks down the right were often snuffed away not by some brilliant bit of defending, but by Carvajal’s inability to drag down the passes from Modric, Kroos, and Isco.
Zidane’s substitutions were something else entirely. By the end of the match, Real Madrid was basically playing two at the back, with Varane and Casemiro sticking back to defend, and literally every other player rushing the box. It was chaos, and while it did result in a lot of chances for Madrid, there was basically zero chance of Madrid being able to do anything about a Real Betis breakway. This was poor match management from Zidane. The decision to sub out Luka Modric in lieu of Borja Mayoral when we already had Bale, Ronaldo, and Asensio on the pitch was a strange one.
I’ve been trying to keep a level head as best I can about Real Madrid’s recent string of bad results, but it’s pretty much impossible to now. Real Madrid are down 7 points off the league leaders. Even if we were to win both Clasicos, Barcelona could still win out and beat us for the La Liga title.
Time to hit the panic button. What the heck is going on at Real Madrid right now?!
