Real Madrid have had an absolutely abysmal start to their La Liga campaign. With six matches played, Madrid find themselves seven points behind FC Barcelona. It’s rare that La Liga ever is decided by seven or more points. So Madrid certainly have given themselves a mountain to climb.

What’s strangest about their situation is that Madrid’s troubles have mostly come at home this season. The Santiago Bernabéu, while one of the great palaces of European football, is an unforgiving place. Madrid fans can be so unforgiving to their team that some, like Miran Saric, have argued that Madrid doesn’t even enjoy a home field advantage when they play in the Bernabéu.

After home draws to Valencia and Levante, and a disastrous loss to Real Betis, Real Madrid are in desperate need of a win at the Bernabéu. Real Madrid finally managed to put in a good performance in the Champions League against Borussia Dortmund. Let’s hope Real Madrid can carry some of that momentum with them to the Bernabéu on Sunday.
