Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is holding out on contract talks with his current club in order to force a move to Real Madrid. Will it happen?

Real Madrid have been in pursuit of a keeper other than Keylor Navas for over two years now. After the whole David de Gea fax machine fiasco and the signing of backup keeper Kiko Casilla, Keylor has remained the starter for Los Blancos.

According to reports from Marca, Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is hesitant to re-sign with the defending Premier League winners in hopes he can make a move to the Spanish capital and Real Madrid.

Courtois was the keeper for Real’s rival, Atletico Madrid, from 2011-2014, on loan from Chelsea the entire time. It was the Belgian keeper who faced Los Blancos in the epic Champions League Final in 2014.

Courtois’ current deal with Chelsea is set to last until the end of June, 2019, but the club wants to sign him to an extension this season. The Belgian has other ideas.

Real Madrid have been looking for a consistent option outside of Navas and Casilla, as the 30-year-old Costa Rican has struggled to play well over long stretches. Casilla, on the other hand, is seen as a backup to Keylor and isn’t expected to take over as a regular starter.

Courtois enjoyed his time in Madrid with Atleti, however, he doesn’t appear to be loyal to the other Madrid team. When he played his former club in the Champions League a couple weeks ago, he said of Madrid, “I hope to return soon.”

David de Gea appears happy with his minutes and the trajectory of Manchester United, and is likely not coming to the Spanish giants in Madrid. Therefore, Courtois appears to be the preferred option for Real if they can make the move happen.

Do I think there’s a chance Thibaut Courtois makes a move to Real Madrid? It’s hard to predict what the keeper will be feeling a year and a half from now, but if Florentino Perez has the option to bring in a keeper in his prime, he will snap at the chance.
