Real Madrid have been the most successful team away from home in Spain in 2017
By Ben Sundock
Since the start of the 2017 calendar year, not only has Real Madrid been the best away team in La Liga in terms of record, they’ve also scored the most goals. Here is how they achieved this feat and what it means going into the weekend.
Yes, you read that title correctly.
Real Madrid hasn’t just been the best overall team in La Liga since January 1st, they have dominated the rest of the field. Easily.
As Real prepare to travel to Getafe Saturday in their first match back from the international break, let’s take a look back at this unprecedented run of form on the road from Los Blancos.
To understand how great Real has been on the road, I need to take you back to matchday 22 of the 2016/2017 season in Valencia. February 22, 2017, was the last Zinedine Zidane and his team lost on the road.
We are just about a week and a half short of it being eight months since a loss on the road. What’s more impressive than not losing on the road in nearly eight months?

How about not losing or drawing since that same match. That’s right, Real Madrid has won their last 12 away league matches, and are just one win away from breaking the La Liga record for most consecutive road wins ever.
9 of those wins in the streak carry over from last season and so far this season, Los Blancos have won three.
Winners of 13 out of their last 15 on the road, Real Madrid have been an unstoppable force when not in the friendly confines of the Santiago Bernabéu. They have accumulated the most points, the most wins, and the most goals of any team in Spain.
The dropoff from Real to both FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid is substantial, to say the least.
Barca are second on the list with 10 wins over the last 15 games and Atleti sit third, winning 8 of their last 15 away from home. In terms of points, Real has racked up a stunning 39 points while both Barca and Atleti have managed a still impressive 32.
The stat that really blew me away was the number of goals scored over this stint. 45 in 15 matches is nearly unheard of in the modern game. That’s a 3 goal per match average over eight months.
Barca and Atleti, on the other hand, have totaled 36 and 29 respectively.
The key to winning titles is sustained goal scoring and sustained wins. Real Madrid has met the criteria.
The two biggest victories during the stretch have come against Deportivo La Coruña on April 26th, 6-2, and against Granada on May 6th, 4-0.
If Zidane can break yet another record before he’s been in charge of the team for two-years, is it safe to say he’s one of the best managers ever at the club?
I would have to say yes. Two Champions League titles and a La Liga title are exactly what fans want this club to achieve every year and Zizou is doing that.
