Real Madrid struggle against a very unlikely opponent as Girona take all three points against the visiting Los Blancos.

Real Madrid was caught by surprise as Girona took the game to Madrid early. With no desire to set back and allow the title holders bring the game to them, Girona looked dangerous from the get-go, hitting both posts in the first half.

Isco scored in the 12′ minute picking up the stopped shot by Ronaldo to bring Madrid into the lead 1-0. From there out it seemed to be a simple walk in the park but within 4 minutes of the second half Girona took over the scoreline 2-1 and didn’t look back from then. Madrid pushed forward with wave after wave of attacks but nothing came to any fruition.

The back of Madrid was sloppy (and that’s putting it lightly) from the very first whistle. Varane was able to bail out his team on several occasions but was subbed off for the start of the second half due to an apparent injury. When the Frenchman went that was Girona’s time to strike, and strike they did with force.

Girona’s second goal was questionably offside but let that be no excuse for the World Champions to be losing to a newly promoted team. Today’s loss marked the first time since 2008 that Madrid lost to a newly promoted team.

The first half showed some promise with some decent linkup between Ronaldo and Benzema but by the time the second half came around, both seemed non-existent. Sadly with Madrid’s true attackers off the beat, Zidane brought off both wingers, Marcelo and Achraf replacing them with Asensio and Vasquez respectively. This desperation is something that has yet to have been witnessed for some time, sadly his plan did not work either.

All around today the boys looked tired and lost today from every third of the pitch. Modric looked tired and poor on the ball, he had a few gems of passes but looked far from his normal self. Girona shut down Isco and the attack seemed to have fizzled out.

Casemiro was humble but sad in his post-match interview saying ” We are far from our level and where we need to be, this is not us” he ended the interview congratulating his opponents in saying “Girona scored 2 goals and we scored 1 so they got the 3 points and won”

Zidane will be looking to rejuvenate is squad as they head into Champions League action this  Wednesday against Tottenham. As the injury list gets bigger again, it will be interesting to see how he positions his players and where.
