Real Madrid has added yet another name to their ever-growing list of injuries as it was announced yesterday that third choice goalkeeper Luca Zidane was forced to get surgery on a lingering shoulder issue. Here are the details.

Although he had been training with the first team for over two months, it was unknown why Zinedine’s son, Luca, had yet to feature in a competitive match this season.

Before Real’s match at Tottenham last night, the club released an official statement on the goalkeeper’s status.

"“Luca Zidane has been operated on for a Hill-Sachs fracture on his right shoulder. The operation was performed at the Jean Marmoz Hospital in Lyon by Dr. Gilles Walch, under the supervision of the Real Madrid Sanitas Medical Services. Pending evolution.”"

For those who don’t know what a Hill-Sachs fracture is, it is a fracture that occurs in the shoulder bone due to a dislocation. The resulting injury is a “defect occurs when there is an injury to the bone and cartilage of the humeral head.”

Luca has had shoulder problems for over a year now, injuring his left shoulder last season in a game with the Real Madrid Castilla side, and later injured his right shoulder (the one which was operated on) in mid-March during a training session.

Thought to be an injury that just needed time to heal, Luca was held out of Castilla matches for the remainder of the season. He was cleared to return to action for the first team on their preseason tour of the United States and featured in the club’s shootout win over the MLS All-Stars.

Shortly after returning to Spain, the 19-year-old was again held out of matches, but continued training. It was decided a couple weeks ago it would be best for him to undergo surgery and begin recovery as soon as possible.

Real Madrid will have to rely on Juventil goalkeeper, Sergio Moha who is just 17-years-old. With Real Madrid thin at goalkeeper like they are at striker, Zizou has a lot to figure out within his team.

Keylor Navas remains out with an abductor injury, so it will be Kiko Casilla starting in goal with the young, inexperienced, Moha backing him up.

Luca Zidane’s return to training or playing is unknown. Hopefully, it won’t be too, too long.
