Just as Real Madrid were getting back in form after a 6-0 midweek thumping against APOEL, it appears there was a knick to Madrid’s crystal clear dominance. Marco Asensio’s injury clarifies any rumors that may have been lingering as he was absent from today’s training session.

Medical Report

A medical report was issued on the official Real Madrid page, stating his injury in detail. According to the announcement, the Real Madrid Sanitas medical team has diagnosed Asensio with an external obturator injury on his right leg.

The muscle injured originates from the lateral portion of the pelvis and inserts into the femur (thigh bone). This muscle group is responsible for lateral hip rotation as well as the extension of the leg.

The statement expressed that he will, of course, be monitored. It is not yet clear the severity of the injury and how long it may be before he returns.

Seasons Stats

Asensio has been doing well for himself, to say the least. Zidane has featured him in all 12 La Liga fixtures thus far, having started eight and being substituted in, four times. His most notable game was in Week 2 when Real Madrid drew with Valencia, scoring two goals himself, one of which was a beautiful freekick.

The Mallorca man has netted four goals and assisted his side twice in La Liga. With four appearances in the Champions League, he has been unable to score or create a direct chance but has still looked threatening. Safe to say, he will be missed.

Now what?

Madrid fans have been calling, if not, screaming for Zidane to feature more of the youth talent at his disposable, such as Dani Ceballos and Marcos Llorente. With Asensio out of the squad for the next couple fixtures at a minimum, this opens up the doors for others to showcase their talents.

Conventionally, we would have Kroos-Casemiro-Modric in a regular 4-3-3, but this is Madrid and nothing is conventional anymore. With Gareth Bale just nearing his way back into the squad, Isco is likely to still take his spot, rightfully so I may add, in the free-roaming role he plays so very well.

With a midfielder option available Zidane may give the keys to Dani Ceballos, a name Madridistas wish they could hear echoing through stadiums a lot more. If this does not force Zidane to play some of our new summer signings who knows when it will happen.

Nonetheless, we all wish Marco Asensio a speedy recovery and quick return back to the pitch!
