Reason 3 – Financial Problems

Real Madrid are one of the wealthiest club’s in the world today, but, this was not always the case. During the tenure of his predecessor, Lorenzo Sanz, Real Madrid struggled financially. In 1998 and 2000, Real Madrid only qualified for the Champions League because they were defending champions. When Florentino Perez took over in 2000, he promised to clear a debt of 300 million.

Even after clearing the large debt, Perez Galácticos business model seriously struggled and following the departure Vicente Del Bosque in 2003, the club had to wait three years for a major trophy.  It is only in recent years that Perez has managed to find a successful business model at Real Madrid, one that has yield three Champions League title in four years.

In light of institutional and financial problems at Real Madrid, it could be argued that coaches such Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane have been the first coaches at Madrid in this century that joined a club that wasn’t being handicapped by either financial problems or political instability.

Zidane falls into this category more than his predecessors as it has been under his tenure that Perez changed the focus of his infamous transfer policy. There is no longer an expectation on coaches in Madrid to buy the world’s best players when they aren’t required, with continuity and a long term vision instilled at the club.
