Will Real Madrid engage in a January spending spree after El Clásico loss?
By Alex McVey
After their humiliating loss to FC Barcelona in El Clásico, Real Madrid might be trying to splash big cash in the January transfer window.
Real Madrid got embarrassed in El Clásico, losing 3-0 to their eternal rivals FC Barcelona. Following that devastating defeat, Real Madrid fans have been looking around for any kind of hope on the horizon.
Thus, it is perhaps no surprise that there have been widespread calls for Madrid to make a few new signings to bolster their chances of avoiding disaster this season. The Real Champs’ Ben Sundock pointed out that Real Madrid’s front line could use a good shake-up and perhaps some personnel changes. I argued that Real Madrid blew it in the Summer by not replacing the lost goals from Alvaro Morata, Mariano Diaz, and James Rodriguez, and that they should think about buying an extra striker in the Winter transfer window.
Real Madrid fans hoping Florentino Perez will splash some cash this January may get their Christmas wish after all. Numerous outlets are suggesting that Real may indeed be on the verge of a spending spree in the January transfer window. Soccer Laduma reports that Madrid are going to splash €200m in January to try to make up for their embarrassing defeat. The Sun reports that Real Madrid are set to have two big transfer windows after securing a €175m commercial deal. The Daily Star also are indicating that Perez has authorized a big spending spree for January, with Mauro Icardi and Rafa Mir as potential targets.

These aren’t necessarily the most reputable of sources, so Madridistas might not get their hopes up. But still, there’s some reason to believe Perez might actually make a few meaningful signings.
After all, while January signings are rare, Real Madrid have had some success in the past with bringing players in during the Winter window. As Bleacher Report lists,Madrid acquired the services of Marcelo, Casemiro, Lassana Diarra, Diego Lopez, and Gonzalo Higuain, all during the winter transfer window. So there is some historical precedent for Los Blancos making meaningful signings in the Winter.
The most likely candidate for the January transfer window is Kepa Arrizabalaga, the goalkeeper from Athletic Bilbao, with reports suggesting that Madrid will sign the keeper early in the January transfer window.
But Real Madrid could also be in the market for some more options in the attacking end of the pitch. As Ben Sundock from The Real Champs argues, Real Madrid are in need of some changes in the attacking personnel.
