If you shudder at the thought of Real Madrid, the Spanish and European Champions languishing in 4th position, then please stop reading now.

Qualification for the Champions League is no longer a formality for Los Blancos this season. We currently sit a single point above 5th place Villarreal with a game in hand. That game in hand is a tricky trip to Leganes.

To be certain of Champions League football next season, Los Blancos will need to do a minimum of two things. First, they will need to win their game in hand. Second, they will need to beat Villarreal by a bigger margin of one goal so as they will have a greater head to head record against them should both sides finish on level points.

If our league campaign gets worst and Villarreal overtake us into 4th then Madrid will have to retain the Champions League for the third time in succession, all tall order alright, but one that Los Merengues aren’t unaccustomed to

As it stands, Real Madrid has some serious work to do if they want to secure a spot in next season’s Champions League.
