Real Madrid suffered another disappointing draw in La Liga, as Zidane’s men dropped points to Levante away. Here are three key takeaways from the match.

Momentum Squandered

It finally looked like things were starting to turn around. After a dreadful start to the season, Real Madrid were beginning to look like Real Madrid again. With a decisive 4-1 win against Valencia in La Liga, many Madridistas hoped that Los Blancos could use the league campaign to begin to build a bit of momentum ahead of the upcoming clash against PSG in the Champions League.

But alas, it was not to be. Real Madrid looked flat and uninspired for much of the match during Levante. Despite dominating possession, Madrid’s attack was less than incisive.

More worryingly, the problems in transition defense that have plagued Madrid throughout this whole season continued unabated. Madrid simply do not seem capable of defending against the counter against even the poorest of teams. How in the world they’re expected to do so against the terrifying attack of PSG is beyond me.

Real Madrid had an opportunity to build some momentum. They also had the chance to leapfrog Valencia in the La Liga standings. But they squandered away both of these opportunities. Now Madrid still retain a tenuous grasp on Champions League football next season, and will have to hope something else starts clicking in between now and the mid-February match against PSG.
