Real Madrid picked up a crucial win Saturday over Getafe at home to stay in third place in La Liga. Zinedine Zidane was pleased with the result and called it a “decent win.” Here is everything the manager had to say post-match.

All quotes come via the Real Madrid official website.

Opening Statement

"“The game went just as we’d planned and we looked very good. I’m pleased with the result, the atmosphere and the team’s performance. Now we have to turn our attentions to Tuesday and show even more intensity. We’re ready for Tuesday’s game.”“The team looks better than it did four days ago, I’m sure of that. It was very important to put in a disciplined, all-round decent performance. All the players looked focused, and it’s great to go into Tuesday’s game off the back of a win.”"

Thoughts on Marcelo’s return

“It was important for him to get some game time today and I’m also very happy with Theo’s performance. We’re all ready for Tuesday.”

High praise for Cristiano Ronaldo

“He’ll be with us in Paris and I’m thrilled because he’s enjoying an incredible run of form. We have to make the most of it.”

“It’ll be the first time for me going to France as a manager but I’m going to prepare the match as always, with my players. We have to concentrate and do our utmost. We know it’s going to be tricky and we’re going to have to get stuck in if we want to get a positive result.”

What will the atmosphere be like in Paris?

“We are used to the away stadium atmospheres and we are going to have to focus on the game and not think about the surroundings. We have to be focused on what we have to achieve and in Paris, our fans will be around on Monday and Tuesday so we can prepare the game well.”

Injury update

“They have not trained with the team yet and tomorrow we will see how things are. I cannot say anything more than what I said before. Neither Luka nor Toni has trained with the squad as yet. They are important players but you have to look at Tuesday’s game and we have two days still to go. We’ll see how they get on before Tuesday. We are all going to travel and I hope everyone will train on Monday.”

My thoughts

I think it is a bit odd for Zidane to call this a decent win. It seemed to me like the team was in control the entire match and despite giving up a penalty, shouldn’t feel down about it.

In my opinion, the call looked wrong. Nacho slid in to win the ball and did, while making slight contact with the Getafe forward. The way he went into the challenge looked a bit rash but upon review, there was nothing malicious in it.

I find it odd that Zizou brushed over Marcelo when asked about him. In his first appearance since injuring his hamstring, the Brazilian came on and was brilliant in the final 25 minutes or so.

Theo Hernandez was very good as well, but, with Marcelo having missed two weeks, and to come back and provide an assist like he did is unheard of.

It is good that both Marcelo and Jesús Vallejo are returning to action now and all signs point toward both Luka Modric and Toni Kroos returning to the lineup in the very near future.

This Real Madrid team should have no concerns when it comes to the atmosphere in Paris. Yes, the fans will be loud and into the match, but it is nothing these players haven’t seen before.
