Matchday 29 resulted in a nine-goal thriller with seven of those goals coming in the second-half. Cristiano Ronaldo was yet again the star of the show as the Portuguese man netted four goals alone. The match was by no means a walk in the park, as the scoreline may suggest, but the hard-fought win is just what Real Madrid needs as they head into the international break.

While Madrid conceded three goals, all of which came from set-pieces, there was a lot of good in the match to focus on. Karim Benzema is getting back into form as the season progresses. Toni Kroos and Mateo Kovacic ran rampant in the middle of the park while Marco Asensio and Lucas Vazquez are making good use of the minutes being given by Zidane.

Here’s a look at the starting XI:

Defense

Keylor Navas – 7

Navas did well to take charge of the match, coming out when necessary and showing that despite being the keeper, he is light on his feet while under pressure. Unfortunately, his defense was poor to extinguish any danger from Girona’s set pieces, allowing three goals. That aside, the Costa Rican did well to keep his team in the match.

Dani Carvajal – 6

Dani was on the wrong end of quite a few plays this weekend as the aerial coverage of Madrid was poor, to say the least. After being tasked with marking the much bigger Christian Stuani, Caravajal was out jumped by the Uruguayan twice. Despite leading his team with five tackles, his frustration showed as he picked up a yellow card in the 52nd minute.

Raphael Varane – 8

Varane looked ever so graceful in defense as he showed off some impeccable footwork. Rafa was light on his feet and did very well under pressure. The Frenchman was so involved in helping build up the play from the back he had the second highest number of passes for Real, with 65.

Nacho – 7

Nacho had a decent game as he paired up with Varane at the center-back role. The Spaniard did well for the most part, but his ball watching led to one of three goals on the night from the away side. That being said, he has proved time and again to be a viable back-up in the event of injury or absence of another player.

Marcelo –  8

Marcelo captained his side to another victory in lieu of Sergio Ramos who is currently injured. His link-up play on the left flank was incisive and crafty as he teamed up well with Asensio and Ronaldo. The Brazilian caused problems on both ends of the pitch with three tackles and six crosses.
