Barcelona are the biggest winners in the Madrid Derby

The El Derbi madrileno may have ended all square, but Barcelona are the real winners of the result. The Catalans now lead by 11 points with seven games to spare, and have all but consolidated the pole position for the season.

Anything other than an Atletico victory today would’ve spelt doom for both sides. And as fate would have it, that’s exactly what happened.

Even if the Blaugrana have a tougher run-in to negotiate between now and the end of the season with games against Valencia, Celta Vigo, and Villareal all to come, plsu an El Clasico congested in between, a defeat or two in that run won’t be damaging enough. That’s how good they’ve been all season.

But the derby draw Sunday, made it all the more easier for them.
