Mateo Kovacic

When Real Madrid announced the purchase of Mateo Kovacic, many were confused as to the reasoning behind it. Real already had a full midfield and a packed bench, where was the room for him? Since that time, Mateo has now sealed 50 wins with Real Madrid.

Kovacic came from Inter Milan in the Serie A in August of 2015 for a decent €22 million. Despite the skepticism from many fans and pundits, Kova has proved that he has a spot on this team. With guidance from his countryman Luka Modric, Mateo has improved his game and showcases quite the talent.

Though it took time for him to get into a groove and lack of minutes due to a wealth of other great players, Mateo has strutted his stuff a number of times. Here’s a look at what Kovacic has done with Los Blancos thus far:

  • 50 wins
  • 3 goals
  • 8 assists
  • 2 Champions League
  • 2 Club World Cups
  • 2 European Super Cups
  • 1 La Liga
  • 1 Spanish Super Cup

While the goals and assists aren’t high for Mateo, it’s his work through the middle of the park that has shown his talent. His defensive play in the midfield has been impactful and consistent in times of need. Most recently is his outstanding performance in the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain. Many have lauded Kovacic as the replacement for Modric and that in of itself says a lot about the class and pedigree of Mateo.
