Real Madrid: Luka Modric open to MLS move in the near future
By Ben Sundock
Real Madrid midfielder, Luka Modric, made a bit of a shocking statement in an interview over the weekend. The Croatian international said he would be open to moving to the United States in the next couple years. But why?
“I’m happy. I always said that I would like to finish my career in Madrid if it’s possible. But if not, maybe I can see myself also [in the U.S.],” Luka told Swedish media outlet SVT Sports last month.
Modric said that he could see himself making a move to the MLS once his current contract with Real Madrid expires in 2020. Right now, the midfielder is 32-year-old and will be 34 once it is time to discuss a new contract.
These comments might worry Madridistas as Luka has become a staple in the Zinedine Zidane midfield alongside Toni Kroos and Casemiro. However, it wouldn’t be crazy for this move to actually happening, considering how successful Zlatan Ibrahimovic has already been since making the switch from Manchester United to the LA Galaxy.
Don’t get too worked up Real Madrid fans, this is all hypothetical right now. Modric went onto say, “You never know what can happen. I still have two more years on my contract with Real Madrid.”
The subject was brought up because of Zlatan’s recent move and Luka voiced his support for the Swedish star in his endeavors in the US.
“He was such a big player in Europe the last 10-20 years, one of the best strikers. It’s his decision, I wish him all the best, and hopefully, he will enjoy it there.”
Like many Real fans, I don’t want to see Luka leave, but at the same time, I think this would be a really good cap to an already fantastic career. At this point, he has countless possibilities for what he wants to do following the end of his current contract with Los Blancos.
If he wants to stay, I am sure President Florentino Perez would want to keep him around for another year or two so he can retire a Real Madrid player. However, if the midfielder wants to go out and experience the MLS before calling it quits, every team in the league would come calling.

As to what I think will happen, I really can’t make a definitive argument right now. It depends on how well he performs over the next couple seasons.
No matter where he ends up before retiring, Luka Modric will always be viewed as one of the best midfielders to sport the Real Madrid white jersey.
