Player ratings from Real Madrid’s 2-1 win over Bayern Munich
Real Madrid traveled to Munich, Germany on Thursday for the first-leg of the semi-finals. Here’s a look at the player ratings from the match.
Zinedine Zidane led his men to the Allianz Arena to battle against Jupp Heynkes and Bayern Munich. It was a highly anticipated match with these two European giants going head-to-head. Madrid and Munich have met so many times in the Champions League the fixture is being highlighted as the UCL Classic.
While it was a very scrappy game for both teams, Real was able to pull through with a victory and two very important away goals.
Defense
Keylor Navas – 6
His biggest blunder was, of course, the goal by Joshua Kimmich. In his defense, though, it was 50/50 when assessing the situation: Either Navas, A – focused on Joshua ensuring that he blocked his shot, leaving the possibility for a cross open or B – look to stop the cross but leaving a gaping hole for Kimmich to fire it home. Apart from this mistake, Navas did well to come out of goal in set pieces. He also made a few huge stops to keep Madrid up in the second half.
Dani Carvajal – 7
Carvajal had the first clear-cut chance of the match after the ball found it’s way to the right-back who struck it right at the Bayern goalie. Dani did well moving up the flank but did not curl in as many crosses for some reason. Unfortunately for Madrid, he picked up an injury and had to be substituted off.
Raphael Varane – 8
Varane was so solid against Bayern Munich the co-editor of The Real Champs called him a “brick wall” and wrote an article on his brilliant performance. It was one hell of a performance for the Frenchman as he celebrated his 26th birthday. Varane had four tackles, six clearances, and three blocked shots.
Sergio Ramos – 8
Classic Ramos, a true bad to the bone defender. After a bit of a shaky start, the Capitan put his body on the line time after time. Ramos did well to bring the ball out from the back and help build momentum into the attack.
Marcelo – 8
Marcelo brilliantly canceled out his own error early in the first-half. The wing-back was caught upfield while Kimmich burst through the back line of Madrid as he went in on goal. Before the half-time whistle, Marcelo leveled the scoreline with a sweet strike that made its way through traffic and into the goal. In addition, the defender has been more of an attacker this Champions League as he has scored a goal in every round of the knock-out stage.
