Real Madrid backup striker, Borja Mayoral, has voiced his discontent with the lack of minutes he has been receiving this season. So much so he has said that he will leave the club this summer. Here are the details.

“I’m sure I’ll have to leave at the end of the season to find regular playing time somewhere else,” Borja said following Real’s 2-1 win over Leganés Saturday.

Despite scoring his second league goal of the season in the win, the young Spanish forward is looking to leave the capital in search of a more permanent role elsewhere. The argument from the 21-year-old is a valid one as he has only featured in 20 matches this campaign.

While Borja has struggled to even make the Real Madrid bench following their exit from the Copa Del Rey early in 2018, he has scored six goals in his limited playing time. Manager Zinedine Zidane has shown his support for out-of-form forward Karim Benzema despite the striker scoring just two more goals than Borja.

This is an even more frightening statistic considering Benz has played in 16 more matches than his backup and has still been unable to score goals.

In the post-match interview with GOL, Mayoral went on to say, “I’m very happy because I work every day to have opportunities like this and you never know when it’s going to happen. You have to be prepared and give everything in every session. The players always have to be on top form for the coach.”

While many fans might not miss Borja Mayoral if he does indeed leave, this potential move ties the hands of both President Florentino Perez and Zizou who have no other options to backup Karim Benzema at striker.

Looking at it in a positive way, Real Madrid would have to go out and sign another player to be a depth guy or potential future starter this upcoming summer.

I was very unhappy the team didn’t sign another striker last summer after letting both Alvaro Morata and Mariano Diaz depart. Now they can do that.

I wish Borja the best in his future endeavors and hope he does manage to find first-team minutes. I think it would be for the best for both parties to part ways and look for alternatives moving into next season.
