More from The Real Champs

Every Barcelona triumph is a dagger through Madrid’s heart. And after the latest piece of silverware, which also capped off another Spanish double, it’s time for the men in white to respond.

The semi-final couldn’t have been better placed. It comes just days after the Blaugrana were crowned kings of Spain, and right before the El Clasico, however inconsequential.

Real Madrid must make a statement of intent by securing the passage to another European final, salvaging some pride while stepping onto the field at Camp Nou on Sunday.

Imagine getting dumped out of Europe and then performing a guard of honor to Barcelona. That’s a nightmarish prospect.

And even if the latter scenario may not transpire given the towering egos in the camps and hostile relationships, Los Blancos should enter the game as European finalists, a big statement of its own.

Barcelona may have restored domestic hegemony, but Real Madrid continue to rule the roost in Europe. A third consecutive final would be a perfect testament to that, for now.
