Marcelo reaches 450 caps with Real Madrid

Real Madrid defender Marcelo has reached an incredible milestone with the club this past weekend. Here’s a snapshot look at his time since joining.

Marcelo Vieira da Silva Júnior commonly known by his first name, Marcelo. The Brazilian wing back has reached a remarkable milestone in his career. Marcelo started against Celta Vigo this past weekend. In doing so he has now played 450 matches for the Whites. Along with hitting the 450 mark, Marcelo also turned 30 years old that same day.

The wingback started out his professional playing career with Brazilian club Fluminense. After a stint with the U20 side, Marcelo was prompted for the first team. After just one season with the first team, Real Madrid made their move. Real would purchase Marcelo from the Brazilian club for a fair sum of €6.5 million.

Marcelo who is in his 12th season with Real Madrid and ever since his arrival has gotten better with time. Since his time at the club, the defender has claimed victory 317 times and scored 33 goals. His 450 matches have been spread across six competitions, domestic, continental, and global.

His greatest number of appearances in a single season happened in the 2014-2015 campaign, participating in 53 matches. This season Marcelo has played in 42 games totaling over 3, 400 minutes of play. In addition to his great defensive qualities, he has chipped in 5 goals and 8 assists.  All his efforts have amounted to an incredible 18 titles won.

After the victory, Real Madrid President Florentino Perez met with Marcelo in the locker room. Florentino Perez took out some time to share his appreciation to Marcelo along with a special jersey to celebrate the momentous occasion.

Marcelo is currently under contract until June of 2022 leaving lots of time for more records to be broken. He has become a vital part of the team with masterful displays in both attack and defense. Marcelo has also shown great leadership as he is the designated second captain in the event Sergio Ramos is unavailable to fulfill his role.
