Karim Benzema is looking to make a splash this season by helping the squad continue to win trophies. The departure of Ronaldo means that Real Madrid needs him more than ever before.

Karim Benzema was previously linked to a departure from the club, with the likes of A.C. Milan keen on signing the striker. Fortunately, Benzema is happy about the position he is in and feels he can be an important factor in the post-Cristiano Ronaldo period.

However, his statements come into question when we analyze his performances the past couple of seasons. In the 2017/2018 season, he managed only five goals in La Liga and five in the Champions League, as well as just one goal in both the Supercopa and Copa del Rey.

In the 2016/2017 season, he only scored 11 in La Liga and fice in the Champion’s League, with one in the Copa del Rey and two in the Club World Cup. There’s a noticeable pattern of decline in the past two seasons alone. Added to the fact he’s only managed to score 30+ goals in a season once during his time at Madrid, which was during the 2011/2012 season.

Regardless, Benzema has remained positive and has made plenty of comments on his thoughts for next season.

"“We have to keep winning silverware because the target here is always to win things as a team.”“On a personal level, I’ll be looking to have a better season than I did last time around and continue to etch my name into the club’s history books.”"

Benzema has also improved under new coach Julen Lopetegui and is optimistic for working with him throughout the season.

"“We know that Lopetegui is a coach who likes his teams to have the ball and play a possession-based game.”“He also places great emphasis on working hard when we lose the ball and how we press after we’ve given possession away.”"

The Frenchman has been looking sharp in the preseason training, so there’s no reason to doubt he could turn around his form.

Overall, next season will be key for both Benzema and Gareth Bale. After losing a 50 goal a season player, you need your Galactico signings to step up to the plate.

Even with injury problems last year, Bale had 21 goals. If he can stay fit and Karim finds form, there will be a lethal duo in the front. It’s an unusual time at the club, and the fight for domestic turf is more important now more than ever regardless of European glory.
