Real Madrid has officially announced the signing of Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. Here’s a look at what this means for the current goal keeping situation at the club.

Real Madrid has made an announcement on their official website as well as on their social media about the signing of Thibaut Courtois. The keeper has been linked to Los Blancos since the beginning of the transfer window but today is the day. This is also Real Madrid’s first big signing of the club, one will for sure be a part of the first team.

Courtois had reportedly wanted a move from the Blues for some time now, with Real Madrid being the main target. The keeper had a stint with rivals Atletico Madrid a few years back the city where his family remained despite his transfer to London. Coming back to Madrid is a huge motivation for the netminder.

While the fee is not known and wasn’t mentioned by either club in their official statements the duration of his contract is known. The 26-year-old has signed a six-year deal with Real. Given his current age and duration of his contract, Madrid will be getting prime Courtois at their disposal.

Real Madrid’s medical partner Sanitas will conduct the official medical tomorrow as per the statement. The presentation will then happen at 1 PM (local time) later the same day in the presidential box at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium. Courtois will then make his first appearance in his new kit followed by questions in the media room.

Manager Julen Lopotegui has a lot on his plate with two incredible options for first-team football. Keylor Navas has arguably saved his team on numerous occasions over the last few years making a strong case for himself. Unfortunately, the Costa Rican finds himself in the back seat. His departure is not likely but the likes of now third choice keeper Kiko Casilla is. Andriy Lunin will most likely go out on loan along with Luca Zidane.

The coming days and interview with the head coach, Julen may give some indication as to what may happen. The first official game on the schedule is against neighbours Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup. Whoever starts on that night could foreshadow what we may see for the remainder of the season.
