Second-Half

Real Madrid came out the gates in the second half with a little more hop in their step than how they started the first half. Again great movement from the Whites proved to be a pain for Atletico. In the second stanza manager, Julen Lopotegui would make use of all three of his substitutions, each one bringing a different dynamic despite all being attack-minded players:

  • 57th minute – Luka Modric ON for Marco Asensio
  • 76th minute – Dani Ceballos ON for Casemiro
  • 83rd minute – Lucas Vazquez ON for Isco

Sergio Ramos would step up to the penalty spot in the 63rd minute after a handball from Atletico defender Juanfran. Capitan Ramos took the penalty with his usual stutter stepping swagger. Burying the penalty put Real Madrid up 2-1.

Real started to look a little too comfortable as they played the possession game and kept chasing for another goal. Unfortunately, it was not with the same intensity as when they are down a goal. Isco and Bale teamed up for a great chance but Lucas Hernandez took the ball away at the last second.

Diego Simeone would come back and score again for his side putting the scoreline at 2-2. Marcelo’s idea of trying to keep the ball in play in the defensive third proved to be costly as Atletico capitalized instantly. That would be the final scoring play of the game as the match would go into extra time.
