#5 No La Liga again, but the Copa Del Rey will be ours

In the aftermath of Barcelona’s recent Joan Gamper trophy friendly against Boca Juniors, Lionel Messi, the new captain, made their intentions very clear by placing the premium on the Champions League and how they are going to “do it all to bring the beautiful trophy back to the Camp No.”

Well, that’s a clear statement of intent and Messi isn’t merely shooting in the dark. The Blaugrana do boast a squad that can go all the way. However, with the raft of new signings, they’ve also made the squad strong enough to retain the league title.

It isn’t an exaggeration. Just look at the current team. What’s more startling is the immense depth in virtually every department. Atletico Madrid spent €100 million in an effort to bolster the team and look ready to challenge for the title for the first time since arguably 2015/16.

Next. Why Real Madrid’s transfer policy has changed. dark

We should be really worried. Despite a lackluster campaign last time, the club hasn’t made any marquee signings with the exception of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. The defense was once again laid bare in the Super Cup clash while the midfield, despite the top drawer quality, looks to be still reeling from the World Cup exertions.

The omens are bad, but the Copa Del Rey offers a realistic chance of a silverware at the end of the campaign, while the other sides are busy fighting for bigger prizes. We won’t finish title-less, and Lopetegui won’t get the axe. Don’t worry.
