Real Madrid’s Defence

It’s not often we get to praise Real Madrid’s defense for doing just that, but all four of the back line were fully deserving of their clean sheet.  Madrid conceded just a single shot on target in this game and that shot came in stoppage time.

The defensive line rarely looked troubled and the few times that Getafe did threaten, it was generally because Madrid had made a mistake. Poor judgment from the back line arguably cost Lopetegui’s men the Supercup on Wednesday, but, these errors looked more down to rustiness than anything else and the defence recovered well from the handful of mistakes it made.

Leading the surprise defensive effort was none other than Marcelo! The Brazilian made three successful tackles and locked down Madrid’s generally vulnerable left-hand side. Getafe’s lack of ambition helped of course, but its still encouraging to see Marcelo start his season on a good note defensively while also continuing to do all the things we love about Marcelo.
