Real Madrid is said to be looking to beef up their defence with Spanish defender Marco Alonso. Here’s a look at the deal and what he brings to the table.
There is no questioning the durability of this Real Madrid defence, it’s been the same story for a few seasons now. While the midfield and attack have plenty of options the defensive third lacks the same depth. The arrival of a new defender adds more options for manager Julen Lopotegui and creates competition amongst the back line.
This summer transfer window Real has elected to loan out two defenders, Achraf Hakimi to Borussia Dortmund and Theo Hernandez to Real Sociedad. With two options out the door, it would be wise of Madrid to bring one person in. Competing for all three titles is no small task, having the right depth makes that task a little easier though. With a scheduled rotation of the players, this would allow them to stay fresh and healthy without having to overexert themselves.
AS has reported that Chelsea FC has yet to put a price tag on the Spaniard but reports suggest he’s listed at €30 million. Alonso has been with Chelsea since 2016 after his move from Italian club Fiorentina. Real Madrid will have to act fast though with a little over a week remaining in the transfer window.
Oddly enough the move to Real Madrid would technically be a return. Marcos was a part of the Real Madrid youth system back in 2008. He worked his way up to the Castilla before his departure in 2010 to Bolton. Not only is he a great player but his understanding of the Real Madrid culture and environment is already present.
Since his time with Chelsea, Marcos has contributed quite a bit to his side. Alonso has won both the Premier League as long as the FA Cup with the Blues. It was Marcos’ late goal that secured the FA Cup title against Chelsea earlier this month. The defender has shown that he can do more than just that with great IQ in the offensive half as well. Putting it simply, he fits the Real Madrid archetype of a wing back.
This may not be the Galactico signing that many are hoping for, but then again that policy seems to have changed. Marcos is a player with a great skill set and ability to play anywhere along the back line. His time in both Serie A and the Premier League has seasoned him into the footballer that he is. One that could very well be an asset to this Real Madrid squad.
