Real Madrid’s Luka Madrid nominated for UEFA POTY

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has been nominated for the UEFA Player of the Year award along with Cristiano Ronaldo. Here’s a look at how he landed this accolade.

Luka Modric has earned himself the nomination for the UEFA POTY award after an incredible 2017/18 season. Modric is one of three nominations for the award this year along with Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohammed Salah. Ronaldo also made that list after his spectacular form in the Champions League.

The winner of the lustrous award will be announced on August 30 in Monaco. This is also the same day that UEFA will have the announcement for the Champions League groups. In addition, UEFA will be awarding the best players for each position, another accolade dominated by Real Madrid’s players.

Luka Modric

The Croatian had a phenomenal 2017/18 season and calling it anything but would be an understatement. Game after game Modric was a key factor to the success of Madrid’s trophy haul season. Because he doesn’t score a monumental number of goals the little man is often overlooked. His big game though and contribution is something that everyone should pay attention too.

Luka danced through the midfield of some of the best team in Europe in last years Champions League. Coined the Maestro at Real Madrid, he pulled all the strings in both halves. Modric was also nominated to the UEFA Team of the Year.

His passion and hunger to win was evident more so in the World Cup. His nation excelled making it all the way to the Final of the 2018 World Cup against France. While he didn’t get to hoist the trophy, the journey there is one to be remembered. Luka ran riot from the group stage carrying that form into the knockout rounds. Every game of Croatia’s in the KO rounds went to extra time tallying up 700 plus minutes in the tournament.

Modric’s leadership and contribution was deservedly rewarded with the FIFA Golden Ball award. In captaining his team he was a great example of what a leader is, irrespective of the sport. He was constantly giving feedback to his teammates, instructing them on what to do, ensure a successful match.

Cristiano Ronaldo

CR7 has also made the final cut for the UEFA POTY award after a very memorable Champions League campaign. Cristiano scored in just about every stage of the tournament making a case for himself yet again. There is no doubt that the last 5 years with Real Madrid in the Champions League has made him one of the best players in the tournament, ever.
