The first group stage match of the 2018/2019 Champions League campaign promises to be an interesting one on many levels. Real Madrid is looking to win their fourth straight title and break some long-standing records as well.

Julen Lopetegui is hunting for his first win as the boss in the Spanish capital and the club is hungry for more success in the most prestigious club competition in world football.

Although Real holds countless UCL records already, they will be looking to add two more to the list tonight in the Santiago Bernabéu.

The first, and the more important record of the two, will be capturing the club’s 11th straight opening match victory in the competition. Los Blancos have not lost their first Champions League match since the 2006/2007 campaign when they fell to Lyon 2-0.

This does not put Real Madrid at the top of the list for most successful opening days, but it will slot them into the fourth position behind rivals FC Barcelona (19 consecutive seasons), Bayern Munich (14), and AC Milan (13).

The other record Lopetegui and his men will be chasing is the 34-year-old record held by Tottenham Hotspur. If Real Madrid manages to score just one goal tonight, they will make it 42 consecutive matches at home finding the back of the net.

Tottenham set the previous record between 1961 and 1984 when the competition was structured differently, but still, it is an impressive statistic to be able to score a goal in that many matches in a row in front of the Madridistas.

The last time Madrid was unable to score was against FC Barcelona in the semifinals in 2011.

Of course, the most important part of tonight’s match is the result and starting the group stage off with a good performance, but keep a close eye on these two records throughout the match. It will only make the victory that much sweeter.

Kickoff is just a few hours away, Hala Madrid!
